It turns out a gunman was not on the N.P. Moss Preparatory campus on Feb. 8. Lafayette police were called to the school after it was reported that an armed person was walking building-to-building looking for a student.

There was indeed a teenager on campus, who is not a student in the parish, but he did not have a gun, Lafayette Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper said. It was a rumor, he said. Two N.P. Moss Prep students stole the teenager's cell phone, and the teen went to the school to get it back. During the investigation, police discovered a gun was never involved in the boy's search to retrieve his phone.

Police also say the 15-year-old juvenile student who stole the phone falsely reported the other juvenile had a gun; he was charged with terrorizing and simple robbery.
