Gumbo Cook-Off to benefit infant diagnosed with cancer

The 8th Annual Gumbo Cook-Off heats up Saturday, January 25th for a good cause. The event is held each year at Frank's Downtown and Doran & Cawthorne Law Firm in Downtown Opelousas. The beneficiary this year is 8-month-old Brynn Reviere, daughter of Shanon Stanford Reviere and Scott Rivere, of Port Barre. Brynn is the granddaughter of Brian & Mona Stanford, Lisa & Wayne Chapman, and Marcus & Eva Reviere. She was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma September 16th and remains under the care of a pediatric oncologist, receiving a two year course of treatment.

The event will feature a poker run, music, kid's activity area, silent and live auctions, food, drinks, dancing and a plentiful supply of gumbo.

The musical lineup features Southwinz, Josh DeViller, Ian Woodson, TJ Gautreaux & Louisiana Soul, Kylie Frey, Kristen Foreman, DJ Fuzzy, Clay Cormier & The Highway Boys, 3 Piece White, Blaine Roy & Second Wind, and Cory Landry.

While this is a free event, the entry fee to participate in the Cook-Off is $50. For a donation, spectators are invited to taste participants' entries, once samples are turned in for judging. Prizes are awarded for first place champion, second place, and third place. A specially designed Gumbo Cook-Off Champ Paddle will be passed from the prior year reigning first place champion to a new contender. Grounds open at 8 a.m., kick off ceremony at 10 a.m., and auction begins at 2 p.m., immediately followed by the Winners Ceremony. Music will continue throughout the day, until 6 p.m.

All proceeds benefit Brynn and her family to assist with medical and related expenses. A benefit account has been set up at St. Landry Homestead, with branches in Opelousas, Port Barre, and Eunice - make Checks payable to Brynn's Battle.
