NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New England Anti-Vivisection Society says 110 chimpanzees moving from New Iberia should all go to Chimp Haven, the national sanctuary in northwest Louisiana for retired federal research chimpanzees.
Chimp Haven spokeswoman Karen Allen says it could take 20.
The National Institutes of Health said Thursday that it won't pay the New Iberia Research Center after August 2013, and will move about 10 chimps to Chimp Haven in Keithville and the rest to a Texas lab.
The North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance says its seven members could arrange housing for any retired federal chimps for less federal money than needed to keep them at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio.
NIH said it would comment later Thursday about other sanctuaries and the number going to Keithville.
