GRETNA, La. (AP) - Gretna has won recognition for its overhaul of the city's sign ordinance. The Louisiana Chapter of the American Planning Association has given the city the Planning Excellence Award for Implementation.

Planner, Lydia Jemison of Jemison and Partners, is expected to make a presentation at Wednesday's Gretna City Council meeting. Jemison says the city was the lone winner in the implementation category.

The changes came out of a volunteer committee of business leaders and residents in 2011. City officials began enforcement last year of the regulations, which include limitations on the size and types of permitted signs as well as a restriction on vending machines at convenience stores.
