Greek Company to Pay $700,000 in Pollution Case

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Greek shipping company has been ordered to pay $700,000 in criminal penalties for violating federal pollution laws.
Stanships Inc. of Athens, Greece, pleaded guilty in June to charges that one of its ships knowingly discharged oil in the Gulf of Mexico and falsified ship records to conceal the pollution.
The company was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan, who directed that $125,000 of the penalties be earmarked for wildlife protection and habitat conservation in southeast Louisiana.
Prosecutors said crew members on one of the company's ships, the Doric Glory, knew it had an oil leak in its stern tube but didn't keep any records of the problem or report it to the Coast Guard.
