BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says recreational anglers may catch gray triggerfish in state waters through the Fourth of July.

It says recreational fishing for the species will close in Louisiana waters at 11:50 p.m. on July 4.

A news release says the recreational season won't reopen until New Year's Day, because federal authorities determined that the recreational quota of 217,000 pounds was met and the closure is needed to prevent further overfishing.

The recreational catch of gray triggerfish in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico closed on June 11.

The state and federal governments closed commercial fishing for the species on June 30. The commercial quota was 60,900 pounds.
