GRAND ISLE, La. (AP) - Robbers shot and robbed a man, then set his house on fire, but he escaped by jumping from a window 14 feet above ground, Grand Isle police said.

Robbers got into the house about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, demanding money, and the man was shot in the stomach - possibly twice - during a struggle, Police Chief Euris Dubois told WWL-TV.

The robbers got $900, shot and killed the man's dog after it bit one of them, and then torched the building, he said.

Dubois says the man locked himself in a back room and jumped out a window of the raised house.

Investigators don't know whether the robbers chose the victim or acted at random.

He was in stable condition at University Hospital in New Orleans, officials said.

Jefferson Parish arson investigators and the state fire marshal were called to the scene.
