The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is pleased to share great news! Governor Bobby Jindal has proclaimed the month of September to be Veterinary Medicine Month in Louisiana!
2011 marks the worldwide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the inception of veterinary medicine, with the establishment of the first veterinary school in Lyon, France, in 1761 by King Louis XV. Since then, the veterinary profession has grown to include more than 90,000 practitioners in the U.S. alone. Veterinarians keep our food safe, our farm stocks growing, our "best friends" happy and safeguard us from communicable diseases.
Governor Jindal's proclamation states, "Whereas, veterinarians promote the health of all species and extend benefits of sound and progressive leadership in the diagnosis and treatment of animals to the community-at-large; and whereas, veterinarians contribute to the conservation of animal resources and the prevention and relief of animal suffering; and whereas, the veterinarians of Louisiana help to advance the science and art of veterinary medicine and its relationship to public's health, biological sciences and agriculture in the state of Louisiana; and whereas, veterinarians advance high standards of care in the treatment of animals and continue the standards of excellence in the education and professional training of doctors of veterinary medicine; and now, therefore, I, Bobby Jindal, Governor of the State of Louisiana, do hereby proclaim September 2011 as Veterinary Medicine Month in the State of Louisiana."
