Governor Bobby Jindal will appoint a council member to replace late St. Martinville Coucilman Ronald Charles. The city's charter requires the governor to appoint replacements, but Mayor Thomas Nelson says the city attorney is examining alternatives to give the council the power to appoint.
The city turned over three names to the governor's office, and two more people submitted their names but did so after the deadline. The mayor says he directed them to the governor's office.
Nelson says the city should know next week who'll fill the District 4 seat. Once the governor appoints someone, state police will do a background check then the secretary of state must approve the appointment.
