BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says it has secured a $3 million investment in hazard mitigation grant funding for a Doppler radar system and 48KW generator for backup power that will be housed at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis says the system will be an educational tool for the university and will help the region better predict storms and other hazardous weather. The area includes: Caldwell, East Carroll, Franklin, Jackson, Lincoln, Madison, Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland, Tensas, Union and West Carroll parishes.

ULM President Nick Bruno says Louisiana-Monroe is the only institution in the state that trains professional meteorologists and the new technology will help those students.

Officials expect the system to be in place by the end of the year.
