The Canal Street ferry in central New Orleans won't be switching to pedestrian-only service Monday.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said Friday that the switch from the current ferry, which carries vehicles and pedestrians across the Mississippi River between Canal Street and the Algiers neighborhood, would be delayed indefinitely.
That's because the pedestrian-only boat that was supposed to take over the service, the MV Frank X. Arminger, had more electrical generator problems while undergoing inspection. The vessel's generator had already been repaired.
State officials say the boat can't start service until problems are fixed and the Coast Guard approves.
The Canal Street ferry carried 1.2 million pedestrians and 182,000 vehicles across the Mississippi in 2012. The state is switching to a pedestrian-only boat because it's cheaper to operate.
