HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A Louisiana woman accused of kidnapping her 7-year-old daughter has been arrested trying to cross into Canada with the girl.
Montana's Toole County Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old Laney Smith is being detained pending extradition back to St. Landry Parish.
U.S. Marshals say a judge awarded the girls' father full custody on Feb. 5 after Smith failed to appear at the hearing. They say Laney fled with the girl shortly after the hearing.
Canada Border Services Agency officials stopped Smith on Saturday while she was traveling with a man and two children.
Authorities identified the man as her husband, 29-year-old Cody Wyble. He was not arrested.
The second child was not identified. Both children are in the custody of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services.
