"Connecting individuals and families to services that help them keep the money they have earned is a step toward helping them gain financial stability," explained Jason Huffman, director of impact strategies at United Way of Acadiana. "Being financially stable can put families in a better position to handle a crisis, such as a job loss, illness, natural disaster or other unforeseen expenses. Because of this service and financial education opportunities, Acadiana can become a more prosperous place for us all."
Last year, volunteers prepared 2,632 federal returns. Of those, 1,032 EITC-eligible returns were filed, returning more than $1.9 million in tax credits being returned back to Acadiana residents. Each year, on average, more than $30 million in Earned Income Tax Credits go unclaimed in Acadiana.
The following items are needed to prepare taxes:
• photo ID
• original social security card or ITIN
• all W2s
• any other tax-related documents
