According to Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals Web site, studies have shown 64 percent of Louisiana's adults are over weight or obese and 47 percent of children are overweight or obese.
A local event sponsored by Baby Boot Camp- Lafayette, My Food Coach and The Fresh Market, hopes to educate local moms on how to keep themselves and their families healthy with better food choices and exercise. The event will take place in River Ranch on Thursday, October 17 at 9 a.m. All participants are asked to meet in the breezeway between Fresh Market and Paul Michael.
"It's about education and support," said Mandi Hebert, owner and instructor of Baby Boot Camp- Lafayette, a stroller-fitness program for moms. "Moms are typically the ones who make the meal plan for the week and schedule their family's activities. If we can better educate moms on simple ways to make dramatic changes in their families diet, as well as, physical health, it will go a long way to reducing our state's high rates of adult and childhood obesity."
The fitness class will take place from 9:15a.m.-10:00a.m. and will be followed by a grocery store tour at The Fresh Market led by Daphne Olivier with My Food Coach. The tour will be geared towards moms who want to increase the nutrition in their household by buying foods that taste great and are good for them.
Infants and children under the age of 5 are welcome to join their moms for this event. Moms need to bring a stroller, a yoga-style mat or towel and drinking water. To register for this free event or to get more information, contact Mandi Hebert at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 337-453-4717.
