LAFAYETTE, La. - Area hospital hazmat response personnel will get a chance to brush up on their vital skills during a free training offered Thursday, Feb. 7 at Women's & Children's Hospital.
Hospitals in the state Department of Health and Hospitals Region 4 coverage area are invited to participate in a free one-day hazmat training course at Women's & Children's Hospital, 4600 Ambassador Caffery Parkway.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The training course is set to start at 8 a.m. Nurses who participate in the course will receive 6.25 continuing education credits through the Louisiana Hospital Association.
Sponsored by the Hospital Preparedness Program grant staff in conjunction with the 62nd Civil Support Team, the course covers how to setup decontamination areas at hospitals, how to properly put on and remove decontamination equipment and how to decontaminate healthcare workers and patients during a hazmat event.
All hospital personnel in Region 4 are invited to attend the free course. Participants must bring their own approved PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) disposable suit, rubber boots, heavy-duty rubber gloves and other decontamination gear.
"This training will prepare hospital staff to properly receive and treat patients who have been exposed to hazardous materials or substances. It supports the Emergency Preparedness and Response Programs for each facility, which assist the local communities with preparation and response to a variety of incidences," said Gregory Davis, who heads up Emergency Preparedness efforts at Women's & Children's Hospital.
