Franklin Man Guilty of Aggravated Second Degree Battery

At 5:30 P.M. last night in Franklin, a jury returned a unanimous verdict finding Jacob Zirlott, (age 26 of Franklin) guilty as charged of Aggravated Second Degree Battery. On December 27, 2006, in Centerville, without provocation, Zirlott hit Stephen Charpentier in the face with a heavy object breaking bones in Charpentier's face. Evidence at trial showed that prior to Zirlott hitting Charpentier, Zirlott told his coworker at SMI that he always carried brass knuckles on him. Charpentier saw Zirlott at SMI with brass knuckles before the day of the crime. As a result of this crime, Charpentier has titanium screws in his face that were placed there during surgery to ameliorate the fractured facial bones Zirlott broke when he sucker punched Mr. Charpentier. Charpentier had permanent nerve damage to areas of his face. The sentencing hearing is set for June 25, 2010 at 9 A.M. with the Hon. Keith Comeaux. Zirlott faces a possible mandatory life sentence as a habitual offender because this is his fourth felony conviction. He has been convicted of Aggravated Battery with a Dangerous Weapon in Florida, Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine in Iberia Parish, and Possession of Ecstasy in Iberia Parish.
