On July 15, 2013 at 2:37 AM, Franklin Police Department received a call of a disturbance at 700 Anderson Street through 911. After officers arrived on scene it was learned there was a disturbance between a mother and a son. The mother was identified as Hazel Charles, 60 years of age, of 1910 Canal Drive, Apt. 6. She was involved in the disturbance with her son, Jeremiah Penns, 36 years old, who also resides at 1910 Canal Drive, Apt. 6. Both subjects had injuries and were transported by Acadian Ambulance to the Franklin Foundation Hospital. It was learned that Hazel Charles was being treated for head trauma. Jeremiah Penns was being treated for several stab wounds. Both subjects were transferred to Lafayette General Hospital. At 3:59 PM, July 15, 2013, Hazel Charles died from her injuries at Lafayette General Hospital. Jeremiah Penns remains at Lafayette General Hospital in Intensive Care in critical condition from stab wounds. According to St. Mary Parish Coroner's Office, an autopsy has been scheduled for Hazel Charles. This case is currently under investigation by Detectives of the Franklin Police Department.
