FORT POLK, La. (AP) - The Army combat brigade stationed at Fort
Polk will leave for Afghanistan in October.
A deployment ceremony for the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th
Mountain Division, is scheduled Sept. 30 at Fort Polk's Honor
Fort Polk spokesman Scott Stearns says it will take about a
month for all 3,600 soldiers to leave.
The brigade was created at the end of 2004. While it prepared
for its first deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan, several hundred
of its soldiers were sent across Louisiana to help with disaster
relief after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
More than 2,500 soldiers went to the Middle East in 2006, most
to Afghanistan but some to Iraq.
A 14-month tour in Iraq ended in January 2009 for 3,600
About 6,400 soldiers in other units will remain at Fort Polk.
