ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - After deliberating less than an hour, Rapides Parish jury has convicted a former registered nurse in the sexual assault of an appendectomy patient in May 2009 as the victim recovered from surgery.

The Town Talk reports Phillip Raines faces up to 10 years in prison without a chance of parole, probation or early release.

On Thursday, state District Judge Thomas Yeager tentatively set a sentencing hearing for May 4. Raines will remain free on bond until then.

Raines was arrested shortly after the victim awoke in a recovery room at Rapides Regional Medical Center.

The hospital fired Raines two days after the incident, and his nursing license was revoked by the state after a 2010 hearing.

Raines, a decorated Army veteran, said that he never inappropriately touched the victim.
