MONROE, La. (AP) William Derwood Cann Jr., a businessman and World War II lieutenant colonel who was mayor of Monroe from October 1978 to April 1979, is dead at the age of 90.
Mulhearn Funeral Home said Cann died Monday at St. Francis Medical Center and will be buried Thursday at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery after a funeral at Grace Episcopal Church of Monroe.
Cann was born on a plantation near Monroe, and became executive president of Bancroft Bag Inc. in West Monroe.
The News-Star reports that Cann, appointed to finish W.L. "Jack" Howard's term after Howard's resignation, promised not to run for re-election. Soon after his inauguration the city was flooded and police went on strike.
Cann is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
