Former La. natural resources secretary dies at 86

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Jack Caldwell, who led Louisiana's Department of Natural Resources under former Gov. Mike Foster, has died. He was 86.

David Funeral Home in Abbeville said Caldwell died Tuesday at his daughter's home in New Iberia. No cause of death was listed in the obituary.

Caldwell, a lawyer born in Monroe and raised in New Orleans, served as natural resources secretary for eight years from 1996 to 2004, during both of Foster's terms in office. During his tenure, Caldwell established the Atchafalaya Basin Program and promoted coastal restoration.

After leaving the department, Caldwell was an adjunct LSU law professor, teaching coastal restoration law.

Current DNR Secretary Scott Angelle issued a statement Wednesday praising Caldwell's "service to the state and his efforts to preserve our natural resources and promote their responsible use."
