Former Grand Coteau Mayor Passes Away

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 1, 2010 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church for Jean Jones Coco, age 61, who passed away Monday, January 25, 2010 at Opelousas General Health System in Opelousas.

Interment will be in St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Grand Coteau.

Ms. Coco was a native and a resident of Grand Coteau for most of her life. She was employed by Lafayette General Medical Center for thirty-six years as an LPN and a patient bill auditor. Ms. Coco was a member of the city council and served as Mayor of Grand Coteau for two terms. She was a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Grand Coteau.

Survivors include one son, Jonty Coco and his wife, Risa, of Grand Coteau; two daughters, Ingrid Williams and her husband, Walter, of Oakland, CA and Tara Coco of Grand Coteau; her former husband, Martin Coco; her companion on many years, Xavier Boxie; eight grandchildren, Collin N. Coco, Christopher S. Coco, Alida D. Coco, Langston T. Mayfield, Marion Cecilia Williams, Jordan O. Lee, Miles A. Williams and Benjimin C. Philips; two great grandchildren; one brother, Jessie M. Jones and his wife, Rachel, of San Mateo, CA; three sisters, Ellen Marie Williams of Grand Coteau; Marilyn Kay Broussard and her husband, Charles Phillip, of Belmont, CA and Mary Charlene Rhodes and her husband, Jerome, of Hayward, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Joseph Jones and the former Alida Theresa Lawrence; and one sister, Jessica Ann Jones.

A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Melancon Funeral Home in Grand Coteau.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Sunday and will continue from 8:00 a.m. until service time on Monday.
