Former councilwoman to run for school board

A former Lafayette City-Parish Council member will run for a seat on the Lafayette Parish School Board this fall.

Mary Morrison will run for the District 1 seat currently held by Mark Allen Babineaux.

"My field is education," Morrison said. "I am very passionate about education. I love assisting students and helping them become successful."

Morrison is currently an academic advisor with SLCC in Lafayette.

She previously ran for the District 1 school board seat in 2006. She lost that race to Russell Meyer by 331 votes.

Morrison served one year on the Lafayette City-Parish Council, filling the unexpired term of her husband, Purvis Morrison, after he was elected as Scott's mayor.

She says both her previous school board campaign and her time on the council will help her in this race.

"I think that with my experience in government and education I could do a really good job on the school board," she said.
