The Franklin Fire Department in conjunction with the St. Mary Parish Council on Aging is conducting its third annual Food Drive for Senior Citizens.
Residents are encouraged to bring new can goods and easy to prepare items to the Central Fire Station at 512 First Street. According to Chief Bourgeois, "We specifically need canned meat, fruit, and box meals."
Monetary donations are accepted and all funds raised are used to buy meals for the food basket. Any one bringing a minimum of six items will receive a new fire extinguisher while supplies last.
The St. Mary Parish Council on Aging provides the list of needy seniors for the program.
Bourgeois adds, "The seniors we serve with this program are typically the ones who do not receive any other type of assistance. Either by pride or falling through the cracks of the system, we are the only agency giving them assistance for the holidays. Last year we gave food baskets, provided donated Christmas gifts, assisted in finding furniture and installed smoke detectors to these needy seniors."
