Five golfers didn't have to brave the elements Wednesday and Thursday to qualify for the finals of the Cypress Bayou Casino & Hotel $1 Million Hole-In-One Shootout that kicks off Chitimacha Louisiana Open activities.
That fivesome qualified indoors over two days on the PGA Tour Simulator machine at The Golf Connection, taking on the infamous 137-yard "Island" hole at TPC Sawgrass on the computer simulator.
Ron Gaubert of Lafayette put his shot two feet and nine inches from the pin on the "Island" green and led five qualifiers. The others included Kirk Carbo of Lafayette (5' 7"), J. P. Kolb of Youngsville (11' 8"), George Carroll of Lafayette (20' 8") and Melton Weaver of Lafayette (30' 4").
That fivesome advances to the finals on Sunday at Le Triomphe's 8th hole, where all qualifiers will take aim at a $1 million prize for a hole-in-one. A total of 30 qualifiers have now earned finals berths with three more qualifying events remaining.
Outdoor qualifying continues Friday from 2-6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the front field of Le Triomphe, the host course for the Chitimacha Louisiana Open. A special hole will be set up in the field just outside of the Le Triomphe main gate adjacent to U.S. Highway 90, and players may hit an unlimited number of shots at $1 per ball. The five closest shots each day will earn berths in the finals. A final round of on-course qualifying is scheduled Saturday at Le Triomphe's 8th hole.
Players may secure an automatic spot in the finals with a $100 contribution, which may be made at the qualifying locations or by calling (337) 857-8754.
This year's Hole-In-One Shootout is being conducted by and benefits the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), an all-volunteer non-profit animal rescue and adoption group dedicated to improving the lives and welfare of homeless dogs. More information on ARF is available online at www.arf-la.org.
