It was a milestone for Zydeco music Thursday night, with the inaugural Zydeco Music Awards Show. The red carpet was rolled out at the Heymann Performing Arts Center as people came from all over the south to honor and showcase Zydeco artists.
"It's incredible, it's an adrenaline rush actually," said event organizer Cedric Jackson.
Jackson said the Zydeco Music Awards show has been a long time coming.
"Everybody, they knew what we were doing for Zydeco, they were like, we appreciate what you're doing for Zydeco, we've never had this here," he explained.
And the awards show was just as lively as Zydeco music itself. Roughly 25 bands and over a thousand people attended the first awards show, including local artists and Grammy nominated Chubby Currier. Legendary and influential band, Zydeco Force, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
"I've been with them for 15 years and I'm just proud of being with them," said drummer Raymond Thomas.
The members, Robby Robinson, Shelton Broussard, Kenneth August, Herbert Broussard, Jeffrey Broussard and Thomas all said it's a dream come true to be part of Zydeco music's monumental night.
"It's a good feeling to see all of this and see all of the young guys that's the reason they're playing this type of music now. And I'm very grateful to say that Zydeco Force, the sound that you're hearing today, it all came from us," said Jeffrey Broussard.
Organizers say they hope to make the ZMA's an annual event.
