Opelousas Police have three teenage boys in custody, all suspects in a late night fire. A 16 year old boy and two 14 year old boys are now charged with aggravated arson and 2nd degree murder. This, after a deadly fire in Opelousas. It happened around 10:00pm Wednesday night in the 800 block of Burr St., claiming the life of 55 year old Johnny Little.
"I know the guy by a working man," said Anthony Alexander, a neighbor of the victim. "All he did was work. He never did bother anybody."
Alexander says he, and other neighbors, witnessed the deadly situation unfold.
"They had three guys throwing fireworks at this house," he said. "Then after about 5, 10 minutes later... you seen something go through the window and the house exploded and caught on fire."
"This is a prime example right here, what with fireworks in the city limits," said Donisha Duruisseau, Little's friend. "This is unnecessary. A man lost his whole life by somebody just lighting a firework."
Neighbors also say, after a recent burglary Little had boarded up his back door. They believe that may have been why he was trapped inside the burning house, and couldn't get out.
"He couldn't even get out," said Duruisseau. "By trying to protect himself, he hurt himself."
Now that their neighbor and friend is gone, nearby residents are just looking for justice.
"I wish they would catch the guys, because it was an act of stupidness to me," said Alexander.
Opelousas Police say they are still looking for a possible fourth suspect, another teenage boy.
