Firefighters Continue Monitoring Hot Spots after Lafayette House Fire

Firefighters remain on scene monitoring hot spots after a home goes up in flames in Lafayette this afternoon. At 4:00 this afternoon, firefighters from Lafayette, Youngsville, Milton, and Broussard responded to the home on Verot School Road.

When firefighters arrived, they say the garage was fully involved. Heavy smoke was coming the eaves of the dwelling. The fire quickly spread to the attic area. Shortly afterwards, investigators say the flames were coming through the roof. Firefighters battled the blaze for at least two hours before getting it under control. The 18,000 square foot house was completely destroyed by the fire.

The owner, Ralph Wadleigh, and his family were home at the time. Mr. Wadleigh stated that the fire originated in the garage. They attempted to extinguish it, but the fire grew too fast. They immediately dialed 911. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
