Fired Deputy Brought Contraband into Jail

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre says a deputy has been fired and arrested after being accused of bringing forbidden items to a jailed friend. Webre said in a news release Thursday that La'Quincia Bourgere of Raceland admitted bringing cell phones, an alcoholic beverage and tobacco to the inmate.Calls to her home Thursday were not answered.The sheriff's office says Bourgere was released on $500 bond after being booked Wednesday with taking contraband to a penal institution. The felony charge carries up to five years at hard labor and a $2,000 fine. Bourgere was hired in April. The sheriff's office says the contraband came to light after the phones were found in a shower stall.
