Fifth Inning Home Runs Highlight Fall World Series Finale

With the Omaha Cup title wrapped up by the Bayou Boys on Wednesday, the Ragin' Cajuns baseball team re-assembled the Fall World Series squads into Team Ragin' vs. Team Cajun for the third and final game of the program's annual fall event at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

Team Cajuns prevailed 7-5 on the strength of three extra base hits that produced runs in a four-run fifth inning that erased a 3-2 deficit. Sam Carriere and Michael Strentz homered, then Blake Trahan added a run-scoring triple during the frame.

Team Cajuns saw each of its first five hitters posted a base hit, powering a 10-hit attack. Carriere, Strentz and Trahan each had two-hit performances. Trahan's two RBI were Team Cajuns' high water mark.

Carriere finished 2-for-4 to complete the Fall World Series with a 5-for-7 showing at the plate. His and Strentz's home runs were the first of the series.

Brenn Conrad finished off a well-played series by turning in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate for Team Ragin'. Conrad, younger brother of sophomore Jace Conrad, completed his rookie Fall World Series 4-for-9 with three RBI and three extra baggers (2 doubles, 1 triple).

LSU-Eunice transfer pitcher Cody Boutte started for Team Ragin' and scattered five hits with four strikeouts over his three innings of work. Baton Rouge Community College transfer Kody Smith, who struck out three consecutive in the series opener in his first appearance, allowed just one run and one hit in his two innings of work for Team Cajuns.

Ryan Wilson, who posted the save in the Bayou Boys Omaha Cup-clinching win on Wednesday, was on the hill in the fifth inning when Team Cajuns posted four runs mainly off of three extra base hits.

Freshman Ryan Mockler's two scoreless frames allowed Team Cajuns to maintain their lead.

The contest was extended past the regularly scheduled seven innings for the Cajuns coaching staff to get a look at batters in certain hitting situations and for a few extra pitchers to log time on the mound.

Team Ragin' grabbed the early lead off a Brenn Conrad double down the left field line in the top of the second inning. That scored Chase Compton who began the inning by drawing a walk.

Team Cajuns answered back as consecutive singles to start the bottom of the second inning from Carriere and Strentz blossomed into two runs. Trahan later singled home Carriere and Logan Preston lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Strentz.

In the fourth inning, Jace Conrad in his second inning of work on the mound plunked Compton leading off the frame for Team Ragin'. Dylan Butler ripped a double into the right center field gap and Compton crossed home plate with the tying run.

Tyler Girouard pinch ran for Butler, advanced to third on a grounder and scored when Joe Robbins pushed a bunt up the first base line.

Team Ragin' held on to the 3-2 lead until the fifth inning uprising by Team Cajuns.

Team Cajuns forged a tie after Caleb Adams doubled to start the inning, moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Leonards and scored on a Wilson wild pitch.

The stalemate was brief as Carriere launched a home run over the left field wall - the first round tripper of the series - to give Team Cajuns the lead for good.

Strentz followed with a homer of his own, then Dex Kjerstad walked and stole second base before scoring on Trahan's triple into left center field.

Thursday's contest wrapped up fall practice for the Ragin' Cajuns. Louisiana is set to open the 2013 season on Friday, Feb. 15 against Central Michigan at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. That night, UL starts a string of 14 straight home games to start the season.
