The U. S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals will hear the appeal of several former and current Lafayette police officers who are questioning the decision of a judge to shut down a website critical of the Lafayette Police Department and Police Chief Jim Craft.
In September, U. S. Magistrate Judge Patrick Hanna ordered the site realcopsvcraft.com be removed from the web. In the filing, the plaintiffs claim that the website was a form of "peaceful pamphleteering." They also state that Hanna's decision inacted "the most draconian impingement possible" on their First Amendment rights to free speech.
The circuit court will hear the case en banc (before all judges) on the morning of Tuesday, July 9 in New Orleans.
