The FBI is now investigating the alleged use of excessive force by an Iberia Parish sheriff's deputy in September.
According to Captain Ryan Turner of the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Louis Ackal called in federal agents to investigate any possible criminal activity that occurred during the September 28 incident.
According to a lawsuit filed by the alleged victim's mother, the victim was checking on a friend who was handcuffed. A police officer then allegedly called the victim a derogatory name before slamming her to the ground, placing her in handcuffs, and slamming her to the ground again, knocking the victim unconscious.
Turner says Sheriff Ackal requested the FBI's involvement shortly after the deputy involved in the incident was fired. Turner added that sheriff's office is still conducting its own internal investigation into the incident.
