CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. - A Florida man is in custody in connection with the death of his toddler son.
Police say Cody Wygant, 24, confessed to suffocating the child so he could continue playing video games.
Wygant lives at Bell Villa Mobile Home Park with his wife, kids and in-laws.
Police say Wygant told them he held his hands over his 16-month-old son's nose and mouth for three or four minutes. Then he tightly wrapped him in a blanket so he couldn't get air and placed him in a playpen, returning five hours later after bingeing on video games and TV shows.
After hearing the news, neighbors say they're shocked.
"I was trying to figure out what happened and when we saw the medical examiner, I thought somebody had died," one neighbor told CNN affiliate WFTS.
"I didn't know who it was; we have some elderly people who live down there so we thought something had happened. When I found out it was a kid it just broke my heart."
Don Mabesoone, a military vet who served two tours of duty had trouble stomaching the news.
"I have kids that play with the other children in here, and it was just beyond me," he said.
Neighbors said this isn't the first time police were called to the home.
Investigators say Wygant has an extensive criminal history in California that includes trespassing and rape.
Wygant and also have a 3- month-old daughter who is now in state custody.
