A fatal accident in New Iberia has torn a family apart.
6 people in a car- 3 adults and 3 children. One death, but those who survived have an uphill battle to recovery.
The accident happened where LA 86 crosses LA 680.
State Police say the driver lost control, and went into a ditch.
Headlights and sirens on the highway. State police looking for 6 people on Sunday night. All of them were tossed from a Honda Accord.
The driver lost control and went off the right side of the road into an embankment, caused the car to flip but it landed right side up.
33 year old Shafika Maturin was the driver. So far, she is the only fatality and we say so far because according to family members the other adults in the car are not in good shape and state police say 3 kids: Ages 7, 11 and 13 are in critical condition.
"When I got there they told me Shafika was dead and they said they were transporting Belinda and Montana in a helicopter."
Bryant Maturin is Shafika's cousin.
"Yes, they were all related and the woman who died she had her boyfriend with her in the car."
Trooper Stephen Hammons tells KATC, "I am not saying a seat belt will save you everytime but it greatly reduces the risk of injury and we want people to be smart every time and when you get into a car, fasten the seatbelt.
We still don't have a clear picture of what caused this accident, state police not detailing the factors that may have been involved. Stay with us for more details in the days ahead.
