Eunice Police are painting a clearer picture of the events leading up to the murder of a Eunice woman over the weekend. Police arrested her husband, Robert Lee Heard, on Saturday and charged him with murder. Heard is accused of stabbing his wife, 35-year-old Demetra Doyle Heard.
Police Chief Ronald Dies confirmed Monday that they believe there was a struggle right before Demetra was killed. She suffered from multiple stab wounds.
Her death, of course a shock to her family and friends, especially since she married Heard only two months ago. Demetra's friends and family describe her as a caring mother and a hard worker. They said you could always find Demetra, or Meme as she was called, with a smile on her face.
"Just all the way around good girl, good woman, good mom, good daughter, great friend," said Demetra's first cousin, Enocia Thomas.
"She always cracked jokes, always had something funny to say, it was just meme, you know," added friend Latoya Stevens.
Thomas and Stevens recalled Demetra and Robert's wedding day in June. They said the couple seemed happy together and ready to start a new life.
"When they got together everybody was like wow, this is great, they look so good together and he would do anything for her," recalled Thomas.
Chief Dies also said there were no reports of trouble at the Heard's home on Prairie Street.
"No problem with him until now, he had an altercation in Shreveport but with us we had no knowledge of him besides just a normal citizen," said Dies.
Demetra's family said there were no apparent warning signs and believe Demetra would have said something if there was trouble.
"She had been through stuff like that before, so the person she had become, stronger, you know what I'm saying, confident in herself to know that she could overcome just about anything. So to be in a relationship that was abusive or anything it wasn't for her so she would have just walked away," explained Thomas.
Now Demetra's three sons, ages 12 to 18, are left without a parent.
"What can you say to them, mom's gone? We only get one mom in a lifetime and you can't say enough to them," Thomas said of the three boys.
Robert Heard remains in the St. Landry Parish Jail on first degree murder charges. Heard has an extensive criminal background and was convicted of murder in 1993 when he was only 15 years old.
Heard was charged as a juvenile for shooting and killing a fellow classmate at Reseda High School in Reseda, California. The victim was 17-year-old Michael Ensley, actress Niecy Nash's brother.
Nash released this statement Monday:
"No family should have to endure the loss of a loved one at the hands of a previously convicted violent criminal. I am deeply saddened to hear that the man who murdered my brother, Michael Ensley, has been charged with murder again. I grieve for every family who has been victimized by this heinous individual. My prayers and love go out to the family of Demetra Doyle Heard during this trying time."
