The Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a murder near Mamou.
It happened before 5:00 Saturday afternoon on Reeton School Road off LA 13. Detectives say one person was shot and later died at the hospital.
Saturday afternoon, Crystal Reed's life changed forever. Deputies knocking on her front door delivering grim news, her fiance, 31-year-old Ezequiel Soto is dead.
"He was a good person. He was caring and always loved playing with the kids," said Reed.
Soto was engaged to Reed. They planned on getting married next week. He leaves behind three girls ranging from one year old to four.
"She keeps asking for her daddy and I tell her he went to heaven. He's ok and he'll always be with y'all," said Reed.
A St. Landry Parish family was driving down Reeton School Road and saw Soto laying in the road. They immediately knew something was wrong."
"There was big puddles of blood that was seeping into the gravel. You could tell he was there for a while," said the good samaritan not wanting to be identified.
Soto was shot in the chest and as the good samaritans tried to stop the bleeding, he made it clear he wanted a message delivered.
"He kept saying, "tell my kids I love them, I'm going to die." I was like, you're going to be ok, help is on the way. You're going to be able to tell your kids you love them."
Soto's fiance says deputies told her the suspect's name. She recognized it and says Soto and the gunman were friends. Reed is begging for him to turn himself in.
"Because now, my kids will have to live without their father," said Reed.
Evangeline Parish Deputies tell us they are actively searching for the suspect, but they aren't releasing his name.
