On Friday night police were called to Campus Crossings Apartments for reports of an armed robbery.
The suspect that was shot and killed by police is identified as 21-year-old Quamaine Mason of Carencro.
Police had building seven at Campus Crossings blocked off.
State police reported that multiple shots were fired, fatally wounding Mason.
The apartment where this all happened is where Mason's girlfriend lives.
She and family members say this incident was all a big misunderstanding.
They say the couple was only having an argument and say nothing happened that involved a robbery.
Mason's girlfriend admits that he did have a gun but says it was on safety mode in his pocket when police arrived and opened fire.
"Our hands were up and thats when the dog attacked him and the cops started to shoot. The cops say he pulled out the gun but he did not. He was on the ground and the gun was still in his pants,"said Mason's Girlfriend.
Mason's girlfriend says the people who were at her home when Mason arrived are the ones who called police.
As is standard procedure, state police are handling the investigation.
A spokesman was unable to provide further comments Saturday because the investigation is ongoing.
meantime, the officer who fired at Mason is on paid administrative leave.
