A fatal stabbing is still a mystery Wednesday, as the victim's family and friends gathered together to pray for answers. Russell "Rusty" Lambert was killed in March, his body was found on Moss Street near the post office not far from his home. It's there that his relatives held a candlelight vigil Wednesday night to not only remember Lambert but to seek justice.
Wednesday would have been Lambert's 32nd birthday. Instead of throwing him a birthday party, his family held a vigil for him. After prayers, they sang happy birthday to Lambert and released baloons.
"If he was here we would have been celebrating his birthday, cake, ice cream and look where we at today. 31 years old, got killed, someone took his life. Not fair," said Brandi Mitchell, who has three children with Lambert.
There were no birthday wishes Wednesday, instead his family wished for something else - answers.
"I want to know who killed him, who did it you know, why?" said Lambert's oldest daughter, Armani Mitchell.
Lambert's aunt, Mary Lambert, said she believes the person responsible could be someone Lambert knew.
"I know somebody knows something and if somebody knows something they need to come forward and set us free, to even set him free," she said.
Months after his death, his family finds it difficult to return to the place where his body was found.
"Just leaving him here, it hurts even more, because he just left him like nothing and he is someone, you know," explained Brandi Mitchell.
A father, a brother and a son, Lambert's life snuffed out too early. With no new leads in the case, his family left with the burning question of why.
"I can't even begin to explain how much we miss him, I don't know what made them do this," said Mary Lambert through tears.
The family hoped the candlelight vigil will bring them answers. If you have any information on what happened to Lambert, you're asked to call Lafayette Police or 232-TIPS.
