In the midst of tragedy, a Kaplan family has established an annual scholarship at South Louisiana Community College to remember their daughter, Mia Trahan. Trahan died on January 8 in Lake Charles.
According to her father, Kendrick Trahan, Mia was attending McNeese State University in Lake Charles for registered nursing at the time of her death. Previous to that, she graduated from South Louisiana Community College as a practical nurse. She was a student at SLCC's Gulf Area campus in Abbeville.
Trahan remembered his daughter as lively and passionate about health care, spending time in several health care programs at the Gulf Area campus before ultimately deciding upon nursing.
"Mia's passion was helping people," he said. "We want to remember Mia by helping a student who shares her passion about healthcare."
In addition to the $1,000 scholarship, the family plans to attend the winning recipient's pinning ceremony, a traditional event honoring graduating nursing students. "We want to see this student through to their success," he noted.
The Mia Trahan Memorial Scholarship will be available beginning March 15 for applications. Students must be in their final semester or year of practical nursing at the college's Gulf Area campus. Deadline for applications is May 1, 2014.
Students interested in applying for this scholarship and others should visit SLCC's website at www.solacc.edu and click on Student Scholarships under Quick Links.
