You might see a lot of blue shirts around Lafayette tomorrow for the fourth annual Family Adventure Day. It's a community fundraiser put on by the Healing House designed to give back to families in Acadiana.
Healing House is a place where children and their families can heal after losing a parent or a sibling. Jessica Houston lost her baby boy Thomas to SIDS in 2008. She said Healing House helped her family cope with the death.
"The healing house has been such a blessing to us, we really could not have made it this far. It means so much to these kids and to the parents," said Houston.
She said one of the bright spots in her family's year is Family Adventure Day.
Participants start out with a map that has about 30 locations around Lafayette where they can go and take part in various activities for free.
"Families can go to Acadian Ambulance and climb aboard one of the medical aircrafts, they can go to club lizzy tizzy and get a mini glam over. They do remote control car racing at Big Boy Toys and Hobbies. So lots of different activities for all ages, all interests for those people in your family," Jenee Broussard with Healing House.
While all proceeds go to help the Healing House, the real pay back is the memories families make.
"You know you make memories that you're able to take with you," said Houston.
"This fundraiser actually started out as a gift to Acadiana so to encourage families to make those memories, to take advantage of the day, slow down, let everything else fall to the side and just enjoy spending time with your loved ones, that's the most important thing," added Broussard.
There's still time to register for Family Adventure Day. The deadline is 6:30pm Friday, call Healing House at 232-0443.
It's $40 for a family of four and $10 for each additional person. The day kicks off with a 5k run at 7:00am Saturday morning and you can still register for the run in the morning before the race.
