The Federal Aviation Administration tells KATC the helicopter that crashed in Cameron Parish left Lake Charles Regional Airport about 30 minutes before the crash. The helicopter is a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter with tail number N574EH. The pilot and two passengers were on a maintenance test flight when the helicopter crashed about five miles southeast of the airport. FAA investigators are on the scene.
According to the FAA website, the helicopter was manufactured in 1990 and is registered to the ERA Corporation. The Sikorsky S-76A ++ is classified as a twin engine, 12-passenger helicopter. The company website says the helicopter is capable of carrying cargo and passengers offshore, day or night.
