NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) - Parish residents, public officials and legislators say they're worried about possible future contamination and depletion of the Chicot Aquifer if a natural gas company is allowed to build two more storage caverns in a salt dome under Lake Peigneur.
They testified Thursday night a state Senate committee field hearing in New Iberia about the proposal from AGL Resources.
The Lafayette Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/mQJyBt ) that people are concerned that more caverns will damage the aquifer, which runs beneath most of south-central and southwestern Louisiana and provides water to thousands of homes, businesses and farmers.
The Senate committee decided to hold the special meeting after a packed house filled its chambers for a May meeting on the topic.
