Before deer or dove season, there's squirrel season. And in Evangeline Parish, the heart of squirrel hunting, many people will tell you it's the best time of year. Many hunters and their families packed up and headed out Friday for opening day on Saturday, and there's one place in town that was busier than the rest.
"It's pretty much chaos, but it's fun because everybody is having fun and it's a family oriented weekend that everybody does every year," said Sherry Bergeron with Industrial Supply and & Sports in Ville Platte.
If there's anyone who knows anything about this time of year it's Miss Sherry, she's been with the sporting goods store for more than 40 years.
"And as everybody knows in Evangeline Parish, there's no school on Friday because it's squirrel day," she said smiling.
That's a good thing for seven year old Dillon Lanclow, he's about to go on his first hunting trip.
"I'm going to go hunting and we're going to try and shoot a few squirrels to eat," said Lanclow.
Whether it's your first time, or you're a seasoned hunter, everyone seems to be catching squirrel fever.
"We pumped up, been waiting for it since they closed last year," said hunter Shane Brown.
Hunters were stocking up on the basics, like camouflage, ammo and squirrel whistles. But around here, opening weekend isn't complete without one thing: "It's family, everything is family," said Bergeron.
Brown agreed, he said he grew up squirrel hunting with his family and now he's taking his son.
"Introducing it to them, they picking up on it. My little boy is probably going to do some bow hunting this weekend too out there," he said.
Squirrel season opens October 6, 2012 and ends February 28, 2013. The daily bag limit is 8 and the possession limit is 16.
