Evacuation ordered for part of Plaquemines Parish

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - With Tropical Storm Karen tracking toward the state, Plaquemines Parish authorities have called a mandatory evacuation for the east bank of the Mississippi River, as well as for Plaquemines communities on the west bank that are not protected by levees.

The evacuation order was to take effect at 6 p.m. Friday. Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser declared a state of emergency Thursday.

A voluntary evacuation is being called for the west bank of Plaquemines Parish from Ironton to Venice. Parish officials said the Belle Chasse Auditorium was set to open at 6:00 p.m. as a place of shelter. Residents are asked to bring their own provisions to the shelter.
