Eunice Police say a man was shot and killed by his step father in front of his family Saturday afternoon on Acadia Street.
Vivian Doucet said she was enjoying a family cook-out with her children and husband, 32-year-old Gary Keith Doucet, until there came a disturbance from her mother-in-law's house across the street.
"He didn't deserve it, my boy was just trying to get him peace, dinner and everything and he just turned on him. I guess he snapped," said Selina Fontenot, Gary's mother.
Fontenot said her common-law husband, Richard Kresta, was extremely intoxicated at the time, argued with her son and then pulled out a 9mm hand gun.
Family members said Gary was just trying to keep the peace, but he only made it to the middle of the street where Kresta allegedly shot and killed him.
"My kids had to watch all of that and he didn't care. He saw the kids in the road and he kept shooting," said Vivian.
Gary Doucet was shoot five times in front of his mother, wife and three children. They said he laid in the street for nearly 45 minutes after Kresta left the scene.
"Every time I close my eyes I can just see him gasping for air," said Fontenot.
Kresta, who has a history of domestic abuse and violence, is now charged with second-degree murder and possession of a stolen fire arm.
While Kresta's fate is left to the courts, Vivian is left a single mother mourning the loss of her husband.
"That's all he ever did was go to work and come home and take care of us. He just wanted for all of us to have peace," said Vivian.
