This morning, an explainer on what your child should do if someone tried to abduct them. We know it's likely never to happen but police officers say you should have the conversation with your child and plan just in case.
We found out that education before an incident happens is the key. Also talking to your children openly about how to stay safe, helps when you're not around.
You should be able to let your child walk to school or a friend's house without worrying but police say they should be prepared for a worst case scenario. A kidnapper targeting your child.
"We find that offenders will typical shy away from a group of people as oppose to a single child that is isolated at a bus stop or walking to and from there, said Capt. Kip Judice of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.
Victoria Etan says she stresses to her kids everyday the importance of being aware of their surroundings and staying away from strangers.
"Make sure you know who you're around, make sure there's an adult around that you know and stay with kids that you know. Always stay with someone that you know," said Etan.
Teaching your children how to call out for help and knowing their personal information is key. So I tested some of the children at The Boys and Girls Club. If a stranger approaches you asking you to go with them, what would you do?
"I would run away and if they would try to catch me I would jump, kick them, slap, punch do whatever I can to get away from them and run to the nearest place where there's a lot of people," said Gya Gibson.
"My mom tells me never talk to strangers any time or day," said Carah Gardener.
Studies show children who successfully escaped abductions knew what to do beforehand.
Here are tips to stay safe:
Avoid isolation when walking in neighborhoods.
Stay in well lit areas and never accept rides from strangers.
Kip Judice says Lafayette hasn't had a kidnap attempt in over a year but if you find yourself in that situation, the best thing to do is create distance and cause attention by yelling help.
