THIBODOUX, La. (AP) - Enrollment at Nicholls State University is down, but officials say it's all part of the plan.
Exact numbers for how many students will be on campus are still in flux because students often drop or add classes in the first few weeks. Official numbers will be released after the 14th day of class.
Still, Nicholls officials estimate the Thibodaux university's enrollment will be down by about 200 students compared to last fall's tally of 7,093.
The Courier reports that Larry Howell, executive vice president at Nicholls said several factors contribute to the decrease in Nicholls' enrollment, including a regional economy that has avoided many recent shocks and kept unemployment rates low. He says that means people are working instead of studying.
