Engineer selected for new state veterans cemetery

Meyer Engineers of Metairie has been selected to design the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Richland Parish.
The News-Star reports that the company is also designing the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, once Congress approves its 2014 budget, is expected to pay the $7 million to $10 million cost to develop the 50-acre site near Rayville.
The land, near Interstate 20 and U.S. 425, was donated by the Franklin family. It's supposed to hold graves of about 35,000 veterans and their families.
The state will pay operating expenses, including a staff of 10 to 15 workers, as it does at existing state cemeteries in Keithville and Leesville.
Construction of the cemetery is expected to take about 18 months after plans are set.
