Elizabeth Smart to speak at Hearts of Hope fundraiser

Elizabeth Smart will be the guest speaker at a Hearts of Hope fundraiser in May. Smart's kidnapping was widely reported, and she has since been an advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs and national legislation. "Elizabeth's example and life now is a daily demonstration that there really is life after a tragic event. Her speech not only tells her story, but also discusses topics such as overcoming extreme adversity and not allowing your past to dictate your life's future," Hearts of Hope Executive Director Jill Howell Dugas said. Hearts of Hope is a nonprofit organization which helps children and adults who've been sexually abused.

Smart was 14 years old when she was abducted and was reunited with her family nine months later. Brian David Mitchell abducted her from her bedroom on June 5, 2002 and she was reunited with her family on March 12, 2003 after a biker spotted Mitchell, his wife, Wanda Ileen Barzee, and Smart traveling.

"An Evening with Elizabeth Smart" will be May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Our Savior's Church in Lafayette, Tickets are $50. For ticket information, click here.
