Deputies from St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office, following a two-week investigation into a string of Bayou Vista burglaries, now say they have seven alleged burglars and a juvenile behind bars as well as $2,100 in stolen property.
Beginning August 12, 2014, SMPSO detectives uncovered information connecting the multiple residential burglaries in Bayou Vista to burglaries in other areas. The case grew led to a joint-investigative effort with Berwick Police, even linking the case to other alleged burglaries in Assumption Parish.
Of the seven supsects in custody, deputies say they believe five teens allegedly account for the four burglaries in Bayou Vista on Teche Road, David Road, Canal Road, and Sunset Avenue. The five teen suspects in custody are:
Caleb Gros, 17, 154 Sun Street, Bayou Vista, LA was arrested on August 27, 2014 at 11:20 pm for three counts of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
Juvenile male, 16, Patterson, LA was arrested on August 28, 2014 at 2:38 am for simple burglary.
Callen Slay Richard, 17, 1900 Saturn Road, Bayou Vista, LA was arrested on August 28, 2014 at 5:19 am for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
Ryan Boudreaux, 19, 212 D. Southeast Boulevard, Bayou Vista, LA was arrested on August 28, 2014 at 3:44 am for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
Layne Arnaud, 18, 331 Neptune Street, Bayou Vista, LA was arrested on August 28, 2014 at 4:20 am for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
Detectives said they identified Richard, Boudreaux, Arnaud, a juvenile male, and Gros as suspects in the burglary that occurred on Sunset Avenue in Bayou Vista. Gros was also identified as the suspect who allegedly burglarized two residences on Teche and David Roads.
Detectives said they spoke with the suspects who each reportedly admitted to their involvement in the crimes. Arnaud and Boudreaux were transported to the parish jail. No bail is set. Gros and Richard were transported to the Berwick Police Department pending additional charges in ongoing burglary investigations in Berwick.
Further information on those cases is expected to be released by Berwick Police. The juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.
Of the remaining two suspects, Kaleb Calloway of Bayou Vista was arrested Wednesday and charged with resisting an officer and other charges. Detectives with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division working with Berwick Police located Calloway on the warrant at a residence on Burchfield Lane in Berwick. Deputies said that Calloway attempted to pull away from detectives and that during the arrest, they were able to locate a bag of synthetic marijuana and $184 in cash in the pocket of his shorts.
Calloway was additionally charged with unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, possession of synthetic marijuana with intent to distribute, and transactions involving drug proceeds.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office detectives also identified another suspect in the burglary on Canal and obtained a warrant for the arrest of
Damarcus McNeal, 17, 326 Cardinal Street, Morgan City, LA on the charge of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling. With the warrant, detectives were able to apprehend McNeal following a report of a suspicious person on Myrtle Street in Bayou Vista.
An eighth individual, Brittany Morgan, 23, of Patterson, LA also was arrested Tuesday for unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling.
While speaking with detectives, both suspects allegedly admitted to their involvement in the crime. Morgan and Calloway were transported to the parish jail for booking. No bail is set.
